Update April 2021
'Athena's' Cave
It didn't turn out quite as simple as it sounded, because it took a lot of asking around before the owner of a restaurant at Mikros Gialos informed me that indeed there was such a cave along the coast. Problem was, it could only be reached by canoe.

Apparently, a canoe-like fishing boat was available to transport the treasure, which probably belonged to the shepherd.
Though the prospect of following in Odysseus' paddle strokes hadn't necessarily been part of the agenda, I found a local and ameniable canoe rental service owner who was familiar with the cave and made an appointment to survey it for the following season, which would be spring 2020. Due to Covid-19 the survey was canceled and a second attempt in September 2020 also failed.
I did, however, get on a day cruise to search the coast for the cave and located its wherabouts. Somewhere during October I made an attempt to reach the cave over land, though that proved to be quite impossible. Which did, of course, bode well for any treasure hidden away.
It all meant Odysseus had to have had access to a small boat to get there as well. A boat not much bigger than a canoe considering the cave's narrow entrance due to the rock in front of it, 'Athena's' rock.
