Asteris is Halfway
Asteris exactly halfwaybetween the harbours of Samos and Ithaca
As for the suitors, they embarked, sailing over the watery ways, contriving in their hearts the vile murder of Telemachos. There is a rocky island in the middle of the sea between Ithaca and rugged Samos, Asteris, not a large island.
In the strait between (ancient) Samos and Aigilips there's an island, now called Daskalio, which is so tiny that in Homeric times it was called Asteris, star in Greek. It really is as tiny as a star in the sky. Though it's not in the middle of the strait, it is exactly halfway on the route between the former capital of Kefalonia (Sami) and the harbours on the southern coast of Lefkada (Ithaca).
The city harbour has to be close to the entrance of the strait and in a roughly north/west direction, so that would once again point to Vasiliki bay as the most suitable candidate for Ithaca's city harbour. Let's take a closer look at the area around Asteris and see if the findings here fit Homer's description.
