Hiding
Odysseus went to Troy leading a division of 12 ships with 50 oarsmen each and 40 seamen, I'll explain this later. He returned home alone, being the only survivor. Under his responsibility 639 men lost their lives in war and homecoming. That is not something to be very proud of. Odysseus utterly failed his mission and knew he couldn't return to Ithaca. If recognized he would certainly have been executed. This forced him to stay on Kalypso's island Ogygia. And this is what Odysseus says in Scheria about his stay with Kalypso:

Kalypso and Odysseus, Kauffman
She took me up and welcomed me kindly. She nourished me and said that she would make me deathless for all my days. But she did not persuade the heart in my breast. There I remained continually for 7 years, always wetting the immortal clothes that Kalypso gave me with my tears.
He wasn't forced by Kalypso! She only tried to persuade him. Odysseus realy wants to return to Ithaca, but knows he is not welcome in his homeland. So, he stayed on Ogygia hiding!
It is not a coincidence that Kalypso means 'concealer'. Ogygia is the perfect hiding place:
It is not a coincidence that Kalypso means 'concealer'. Ogygia is the perfect hiding place:
There is a certain island, Ogygia, that lies far away in the sea, where the daughter of Atlas, guileful Kalypso with the fine hair, lives -a dread goddess. No one has anything to do with her, neither gods nor mortals.
Menelaos however knew Odysseus was hidding on Ogygia, and twisted the truth about what forced Odysseus. Menelaos also knew that Odysseus wasn't welcome back in Ithaca.
And in Argos I would have give him a city to live in, and built him a house, leading him out of Ithaca with all his possessions, and his son, and all his people.
There must have been contact between Menelaos and Odysseus. Odysseus must have asked him to keep this a secret for everyone. Nevertheless Menelaos revealed his whereabouts to Telemachos. The only reason to tell this to Telemachos is that Menelaos also must have known that Odysseus had already left Ogygia. So it is clear, Odysseus hided there to await a specific event. There is a feast coming up.
Is that the event Odysseus was waiting for? And where is this all about? Let's return to the palace December 19th.
