Aetolia-Akarnania

Five kilometers south of lake Amvrakia lies another lake, called Ozeros, which wasn't on our route but is visited later. Further south, a 2 kilometer long canal leads from lake Ozeros to the river Acheloös. The river itself empties in the Ionian sea far to the south on the west coast of Akarnania. Between the estuary and lake Amvraki is no more than 5 kilometers of solid ground. That makes Akarnania a peninsula. Apart from the Loutraki and the Katouna blockage and the 50 meter high valley in between, Akarnania is practically an island. Let's take a look to the north and see if there is more water, up to the last blockage at Amfilochia, let's go north.
