Lake Amvrakia is divided into a southern part and a narrow northern part by a highway. The road follows this part of the lake for quite a while, longer than expected due to rainfall that spring. At the end of the summer this part usually dries up.
The elevation of the lake is only 15 meters.

Let's see if the northern wall of the polje is still intact.
It is not hard to imagine that this valley was washed by the sea and a blockage, preventing draining rainwater, could have turned it into a freshwater lake. Eventually 15 meters of sediment filled the bottom of the sea, but once again, there is a problem.
This valley is also a polje and the southern wall is missing. The sea can not have washed here. However the fluctuation of the water level suggests a lack in capacity of the ponors beneath this lake. A slightly smaller capacity could elevate the water level and only a small elevation would submerge the entire polje, this could have formed a barrier making Doulichion an island.
