No, of course this isn't Odysseus' palace, these far too modern buildings belong to an old Greek family. The current owner works in Greek television. Until the sixties Lefkada was divided in a northern and a southern part, this family were in charge of the southern part, which was the smallest of the two and most probably corresponds to Odysseus' land (Apollonion, 41% of Lefkada). The estate has been abandoned and fallen into decay ever since. Some palm trees survived. The walled estate measures about 1,600 square metres: quite befitting a leader or a king, wouldn't you say?
The palace is only 5 minutes away from the point to where we previously measured our walk from Eumaios' hut, therefore Eumaios would've arrived at the palace around 10:15 hrs, still on December 18th.
Farmers near Vasiliki told me that the olive trees around the estate are the best on Lefkada. The moist soil around the estate is in a slightly elevated position to the plain and offers a great view over Spartias. It seems to me like an ideal spot for a leader of this part of Lefkada. Or should I say Ithaca?
It's not unlikely that the estate could've been built on the foundations of earlier buildings, like the palace of Odysseus, for it's easier to build a new house on the solid foundations of the previous one. The building materials are readily available in situ.
