The sequence of the islands
NEXT >
Homer mentions 5 islands, the most significant ones and probably the largest. According to size, the sequence of the now known islands is:

1. Kefalonia/Samos 788 sq km,
2. Zakynthos/Zacynthos 406 sq km,
3. Lefkada/Ithaca 356 sq km,
4. Ithaki/???? 96 sq km,
5. Plagia/???? 80 sq km,
6. Kalamos/???? 25 sq km,
7. Meganisi/???? 22 sq km,
8. Kastos/???? 6 sq km.
In this sequence Ithaki and Plagia are most likely the missing islands Aigilips and Crocyleia.

Homer's sequence in the catalogue of ships was in geographical order and it is to be expected that the sequence in the islands of Odysseus is in geographical order also.

So let's see which sequence we could expect from Homer. If you assume Plagia is ancient Crocyleia, you get the red sequence, if you assume Plagia is ancient Aigilips, you get the green sequence. The conclusion is, of course, that the red sequence is what we could expect from Homer. So, Plagia must have been ancient Crocyleia and present Ithaki was ancient Aigilips.

Odysseus led the great-hearted Kefallenians who held Ithaca and Nerito, covered by forest, and lived in Krokyleia and rough Aigilipa, and those who held Zakynthos and lived in Samos, and those who occupied the mainland and the shores opposit the islands-
