What seems strange is why the builders who built the monastery didn't use the foundations of the temple for all of the external buildings. One explanation could be that there were even older foundations or structures, which were built upon. There's no way to tell, Dörpfeld excavated only a small area, but it's not unreasonable to assume there could have been a structure that predated the temple.
